VISITING CANADA - UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS
Canada welcomes millions of visitors each year – tourists, family members, business travellers, and friends. In a city like Mississauga, where over half of Peel Region’s residents were born outside Canada, international family visits are among the most common and most personally significant reasons people apply for visitor status.
Depending on your citizenship and purpose of visit, you may need one of the following:
- Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) – Also called a visitor visa, required for citizens of visa-required countries, including India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Jamaica
- Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) – For visa-exempt travellers arriving in Canada by air
- Visitor Record – To extend your stay beyond your initial authorized period
- Super Visa – A multi-year visa specifically for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, allowing stays of up to 5 years per entry
Every visitor visa application requires you to demonstrate a genuine purpose, the intention to leave Canada when the visit ends, and the financial means to support the stay. For visitors from countries with high refusal rates, the standard of documentation matters even more.
At IPJ Immigration Solutions, we help you present each of these elements correctly – because a well-prepared application is the difference between a visit that happens and one that doesn’t.
TEMPORARY RESIDENT VISA (TRV) - STANDARD VISITOR VISA
Whether you need a Temporary Resident Visa depends on your citizenship. Citizens of certain countries require a TRV before travelling to Canada, while others are visa-exempt but may need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) when flying.
Check if you need a visa: Canada has visa requirements for over 140 countries. If you’re from a visa-required country, you must apply for and receive a TRV before travelling to Canada. You cannot obtain one upon arrival.
A Temporary Resident Visa is an official document placed in your passport by a Canadian visa office. It shows you’ve met the requirements to enter Canada as a temporary resident (visitor, student, or worker). Most visitor visas are issued as multiple-entry visas, allowing multiple trips to Canada within the visa’s validity period (typically up to 10 years or until passport expiry).
A TRV allows you to enter Canada, but the length of your authorized stay is determined by the border officer when you arrive. Most visitors can stay for up to six months. Your passport will be stamped with the date you must leave, or if no date is stamped, you can stay for six months from your entry date.
To qualify for a Canadian visitor visa, you must satisfy the visa officer that you are a genuine visitor with temporary intentions.
Valid Passport Your passport must be valid for the duration of your planned stay in Canada.
Purpose of Visit You must have a genuine reason to visit - tourism, family visit, business activities, or attending a specific event or celebration.
Intent to Leave Canada You must satisfy the officer that you will leave Canada when your authorized stay ends. This is demonstrated through:
- Strong ties to your home country (employment, property, family, business)
- Previous travel history, including to countries with similar visa requirements
- A consistent and reasonable travel plan
Financial Capacity You must prove you can financially support yourself and any family members during the visit, and that you can afford your return transportation.
Admissibility to Canada No serious criminal record, no security concerns, no medical conditions that pose public health risks.
Medical Examination (if required) Depending on your country of residence and the length of your stay, you may need a medical examination by an IRCC-approved panel physician.
No Work or Study Visitor visa holders cannot work or study in Canada (except for programs under six months) unless separately authorized.
"Insufficient ties to home country" The officer doesn't believe the visitor will return home. Solution: Evidence of employment, property ownership, financial assets, family responsibilities, or business interests in the home country. For applicants from India and Pakistan - communities that represent a large share of Mississauga's visitor visa applications - this is the most frequently cited refusal reason and the one that requires the most specific documentation.
"Purpose of travel not sufficiently established" The officer isn't convinced the stated reason for the visit is genuine. Solution: A detailed itinerary, wedding invitation, birth announcement, event registration, or other documentation that establishes why the visit is happening at this specific time.
"Insufficient funds" The officer isn't satisfied the visitor can support the stay. Solution: Six months of bank statements, employment letters, sponsor support documentation.
"Previous visa refusals or violations" History of refused visas or prior overstays. Solution: Address the previous issues directly, explain circumstances, demonstrate changed situation. Simply reapplying without changes produces the same result.
If the visitor is coming to stay with or visit family in Mississauga, an invitation letter from the Canadian sponsor is one of the most important documents in the file. Most families write this letter without knowing what it needs to contain - and what's missing is often what causes the refusal.
A complete invitation letter includes:
- Your full name, Canadian address, and immigration status
- Your relationship to the visitor
- A clear statement of the purpose and duration of the visit - a wedding date, a baby's due date, a cultural event, a named occasion
- Your financial commitment to support the visitor's stay, if applicable
- Accommodation arrangements
- Confirmation that the visitor intends to return home at the end of the visit
- A copy of your proof of Canadian status and, where relevant, evidence of financial capacity
We review and often draft invitation letters as part of every visitor visa file we handle. It is one of the most impactful single documents in the application.
ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION (eTA)
For Visa-Exempt Travelers Flying to Canada
If you’re a citizen of a visa-exempt country and flying to Canada, you need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead of a visitor visa.
What is an eTA?
An eTA is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. It’s electronically linked to your passport and valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
Who needs an eTA:
- Visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to or transiting through Canada
- Example countries: Australia, Japan, UK, most European countries
Who doesn’t need an eTA:
- Canadian citizens (including dual citizens)
- U.S. citizens
- Travellers with a valid Canadian visa
- Travellers entering by land or sea (only air travellers need eTA)
How to Apply:
Apply online through the official IRCC website. The application takes minutes and costs $7 CAD. Most eTAs are approved within minutes, though some may take longer if additional documents are requested.
Important: Get your eTA before booking your flight to Canada.
EXTENDING YOUR STAY - VISITOR RECORD
Need More Time in Canada?
If you’re already in Canada as a visitor and need to extend your stay beyond your authorized period, you can apply for a visitor record.
What is a Visitor Record?
A visitor record is a document that extends your legal status as a visitor in Canada beyond the initial six months (or the date stamped in your passport). It doesn’t allow re-entry to Canada, it only extends your ability to stay in Canada legally.
When to Apply:
Apply at least 30 days before your authorized stay expires. If you apply before your status expires, you maintain “implied status” and can remain in Canada legally while waiting for a decision.
Requirements:
- Valid passport for extended duration
- Proof of sufficient funds for extended stay
- Reason for extension (family visit, tourism, awaiting medical treatment, etc.)
- Continue to meet visitor visa requirements
- Proof of ties to home country
- No work or study authorization
What Happens if You Don’t Apply in Time?
If your visitor status expires without applying for an extension, you lose your legal status in Canada. You then have 90 days to apply for restoration of status, a more complex and expensive process.
Important: You must leave Canada before travelling elsewhere. A visitor record does not permit re-entry after leaving Canada. You would need a new visitor visa or eTA to return.
SUPER VISA - FOR PARENTS & GRANDPARENTS
The Right Tool for Extended Family Time in Mississauga
For Mississauga families, the Super Visa allows parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to five years at a time. It’s the best option when you want extended family support without repeated visitor visa extensions or short stays.
The Super Visa is a special multi-entry visa designed specifically for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It allows extended visits without the need for repeated visa applications or status extensions.
Key Differences from Regular Visitor Visa:
Length of Stay:
- Super Visa: Up to 5 years per entry (recently extended from 2 years)
- Regular Visitor Visa: Up to 6 months per entry
Validity:
- Super Visa: Up to 10 years
- Regular Visitor Visa: Up to 10 years
Multiple Entry:
Both allow multiple entries, but Super Visa permits much longer stays per entry.
For the Parent/Grandparent Applicant:
- Must be a parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Must have a valid passport
- Must pass medical examination by an IRCC-approved panel physician
- Must obtain Canadian medical insurance from an approved provider:
◦ Minimum coverage: $100,000
◦ Valid for at least 1 year from entry date
◦ Covers healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation
- Must meet standard visitor visa requirements (admissibility, intent to leave)
For the Canadian Sponsor (Child/Grandchild):
- Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (at least 18 years old)
- Must meet minimum necessary income (LICO):
◦ Income requirement: Meet Low Income Cut-Off for household size
◦ Must provide proof for the most recent tax year
- Must provide a written invitation letter
- Must provide proof of relationship to parent/grandparent
Financial Requirements (2026 LICO): Sponsor’s household size includes sponsor, sponsor’s family, and all parents/grandparents being invited.
Example household sizes and minimum income:
- 1 person: $30,526
- 2 people: $38,002
- 3 people: $46,720
- 4 people: $56,724
- 5 people: $64,336
- 6 people: $72,560
- 7+ people: $80,784
Required Documents:
From Parent/Grandparent:
- Completed application forms
- Valid passport
- Two photos meeting specifications
- Proof of relationship to Canadian sponsor
- Medical examination results
- Proof of Canadian medical insurance (minimum $100,000 coverage)
- Police certificates (if required)
- Biometrics
From Canadian Sponsor:
- Written invitation letter
- Proof of Canadian status (citizenship certificate, PR card, passport)
- Proof of income (Notice of Assessment from CRA)
- Proof of relationship
- Copy of birth certificate or other documents proving relationship
Extended Family Time Five years at a time - long enough to be present for a grandchild's first years, support a family through a recovery or transition, or simply spend meaningful time together without counting the months.
Less Administrative Burden No need to apply for visitor record extensions every six months. One application, one approval, years of authorized stays.
Peace of Mind Valid for up to 10 years - fewer applications, fewer renewals, fewer moments of uncertainty.
Health Coverage The required medical insurance provides real protection during extended stays. Services through Trillium Health Partners and Credit Valley Hospital are available to visitors with private coverage.
Ideal For:
- Retirement-age parents wanting to spend significant time with family in Mississauga
- Grandparents helping with young children
- Parents alternating time between their home country and Canada
- Families who want to avoid the cycle of repeated visitor record extensions
BUSINESS VISITORS TO CANADA
If you’re travelling to Mississauga for business purposes – visiting a company at the Airport Corporate Centre, attending meetings at a firm’s Meadowvale Business Park location, conducting negotiations, or participating in an industry conference – you may enter as a business visitor without a work permit.
What Business Visitors Can Do:
- Attend business meetings, conferences, or conventions
- Negotiate contracts or business deals
- Conduct market research or site visits
- Receive or provide training to employees of a Canadian company
- Participate in international exhibitions or trade shows
What Business Visitors Cannot Do:
- Enter the Canadian labour market or work for a Canadian employer
- Engage in productive work that would displace Canadian workers
- Sell goods or provide services directly to Canadian consumers
Requirements:
- Primary place of business and source of income must be outside Canada
- Business activity must be international in scope
- Not entering the Canadian labour market
- Temporary visit, usually short in duration
Do You Need a TRV or eTA? Business visitors from visa-required countries need a visitor visa. Business visitors from visa-exempt countries need an eTA if flying, or no additional document if entering by land or sea.
Note: Extended business stays or activities that constitute employment require a work permit. Specific trade agreements (CUSMA, CETA) may apply different rules.

Total Timeline: Can range from 1 week (eTA) to 4+ months (visitor visa from certain countries).
WHO THIS SERVICE IS FOR IN MISSISSAUGA
Visitor visa files in Mississauga have a distinct shape. Here’s who we work with most often:
Mississauga residents hosting parents or grandparents from abroad. Families with elderly parents in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Jamaica, Trinidad, or Poland who want to spend extended time with family in Canada. The Super Visa is often the right tool – but it requires specific documentation from the Canadian sponsor that many families don’t realize is necessary.
Families planning a visit for a birth, wedding, or cultural event. These are time-sensitive applications where a refusal or delay has real consequences. Professional preparation ensures the application is complete before the milestone, not after it.
Families in Mississauga’s South Asian, Filipino, Caribbean, and Eastern European communities. Visitor visa refusal rates from India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Jamaica are among the highest in IRCC’s system. “Insufficient ties to home country” is the most common stated reason – and it is an addressable problem when the application is prepared correctly.
Applicants who received a visitor visa refusal and need a stronger second application. A second application that doesn’t directly address the stated reason for the first refusal will produce the same result. We review refusal letters, identify exactly what was missing, and build the next application around those gaps.
Business visitors attending meetings at Mississauga’s corporate offices. Professionals visiting companies in the Airport Corporate Centre or Meadowvale Business Park for meetings, negotiations, or training who need a visitor visa or eTA and documentation of their temporary business purpose.
Visitors already in Mississauga who need to extend their stay. Visitor records to extend status before the authorized period expires – filed before the deadline to preserve implied status.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR MISSISSAUGA APPLICANTS
The most common reason visitor visas are refused is “insufficient ties to the home country.” For families in Mississauga where the visit is genuine, the relationship is close, and the purpose is completely legitimate – that refusal is frustrating. It is also, in most cases, entirely avoidable.
IRCC visa officers are looking for specific things. Evidence that the visitor has compelling reasons to return home – a job, property, financial assets, family responsibilities. A clear, well-documented purpose for the visit. Financial capacity to support the stay. An invitation letter that covers every element the officer expects to see.
Most Mississauga families prepare their own invitation letters without knowing what those letters need to contain. Most don’t realize that an applicant from India or Pakistan needs a qualitatively different documentation package than a visitor from a low-refusal country. Most don’t know that Super Visa medical insurance must come from a Canadian provider – not a provider in the visitor’s home country.
These are not obscure rules. They are the specific, documented reasons applications are refused every week – and they are fixable with professional guidance before the application is submitted, not after the refusal arrives.
There’s one more element worth naming clearly: all international visitors to Mississauga arrive through Pearson International Airport. CBSA officers at the port of entry make the final decision on admission. A valid visa doesn’t guarantee entry – if the officer determines that the purpose of the visit isn’t clearly established, entry can be refused. A well-prepared application, with documentation that travels with the visitor, protects against that risk too.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The Super Visa allows parents and grandparents to stay for up to 5 years per entry with multiple entries valid over 10 years. It requires private Canadian health insurance from a Canadian provider with at least $100,000 in coverage, a medical examination, and financial documentation from you as the Canadian sponsor meeting the LICO threshold for your household size. We prepare the full application - including your invitation letter, financial documentation review, and guidance on obtaining the right insurance.
A complete invitation letter includes: your name, address, and Canadian immigration status; your relationship to the visitor; a clear statement of the purpose and duration of the visit; your financial commitment to support the visitor's stay, if applicable; your accommodation arrangement; and confirmation that the visitor intends to return home. For visitor visa applications from high-refusal countries, the invitation letter is one of the most scrutinized documents in the file. We review and often draft these letters as part of every visitor visa file we handle.
Yes. We review the refusal letter carefully and identify exactly what documentation was missing or insufficient. The second application must directly address the stated reason for refusal. Submitting the same application again produces the same result. For Mississauga families whose relatives received refusals from India, Pakistan, Jamaica, or the Philippines, we've handled many of these files and understand the specific documentation standards those applications require.
Yes - visitor status can be extended from within Canada by applying for a visitor record. The extension must be submitted before the current authorized period expires. We document the purpose and circumstances of the continued stay as part of the extension application. If the authorized period has already lapsed, status restoration is available within 90 days - contact us immediately if this applies.
Most visitors are authorized to stay for up to six months from the date of entry. The CBSA officer at Pearson or another port of entry determines the actual authorized stay and stamps your passport accordingly. If no date is stamped, six months from entry applies.
No. Visitor visas do not authorize work or study in Canada. Short courses under six months may be permitted, but employment requires a work permit. Working without authorization is a serious immigration violation.
A visitor visa (TRV) is required for citizens of visa-required countries, such as India, Pakistan, and Jamaica. An eTA is required for visa-exempt citizens flying to Canada. ETAs cost $7 and are electronically linked to your passport. Visitor visas cost $100 and are placed in your passport.
Super Visa medical insurance typically costs $1,500 to $3,000 or more annually, depending on the parent or grandparent's age, health history, and level of coverage. The minimum required is $100,000 in coverage for at least one year, from a Canadian insurance provider. Insurance purchased from a company outside Canada does not satisfy this requirement.
Overstaying is a serious violation. Legal status is lost and you must leave Canada or apply for restoration within 90 days of expiry. An overstay on record creates complications for future visa applications and for re-entry through Pearson. If your status has lapsed and you're within the 90-day window, contact us immediately.
You'll receive a refusal letter explaining the reasons. You can reapply with a stronger application that directly addresses those reasons. Previous refusals don't automatically prevent future applications - but they require a meaningfully different approach, not just a resubmission.
An invitation letter is not formally required for all visitor visa applications, but for visitors from high-refusal countries coming to see family in Mississauga, it is one of the most important documents in the file. A complete invitation letter - with financial documentation, proof of the Canadian sponsor's status, and a clear statement of purpose and return intention - can meaningfully strengthen an application.
In limited circumstances, yes - certain status changes are permitted from within Canada. Others require leaving Canada and applying from outside. We assess your specific situation and advise on the right approach before you make any decisions.
